ABOUT USUI REIKI ~ WHY AND HOW WE TEACH IT
The Roots of Reiki
We offer readers and potential students the traditional history and roots of Reiki here to offer the context of why we teach it as a core part of the Pulse of Life offerings.
Reiki is a spiritually-based system of working with energy whose roots are well over 2,500 years old and embody the original traditional teachings of early Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism. It is the oldest known form of Reiki and the source of all other systems of Reiki, migrating from Tibet and India to Southeast Asia and China, then to Japan via Buddhist lamas and adepts.
Usui references the specific lineage of this form of Reiki, named for founder Dr. Mikao Usui, a Buddhist and Doctor of Theology who rediscovered this system and began sharing it with his students as a complementary therapy to treat physical, emotional, and mental diseases. Sources report that Dr. Usui taught Reiki to over 2000 people during his lifetime, sixteen of whom continued their training to reach the equivalent to our Western third degree, or Master level.
Hawayo Hiromi Takata, a Japanese-American born in Hawaii, helped introduce Reiki to the US. Mrs. Takata was trained in Reiki by Dr Chujiro Hayashi in Tokyo, Japan and became a Master Practitioner by 1940. Dr. Hayashi had studied to the Master level from Mikao Usui, and was the the first teacher of Reiki, in the early 1900s. After completing her Master Practitioner studies with Dr. Hayashi, Mrs. Takata then brought Usui Reiki to Hawaii, where she taught until her death in 1980. It is not known how many students she taught, however, within the tradition, she is sometimes known as Reiki Grand Master Teacher Hawayo Takata. The American Reiki Association, Inc. was formed by Mrs. Takata in the final year of her life, 1980, together with Dr. Barbara Weber Ray, one of her students.
It is interesting to note the conjecture that Reiki has been reported to be the healing technique that Jesus practiced during his lifetime. However, when Dr. Usui's original Reiki manuscript was found in 1994, he cited the origins to be Gautama Buddha and the Buddhist text, Tantra of the Lightning Flash, so it is assumed that Mrs. Takata perhaps made a reference to the origins and that of Jesus to make it more palatable and acceptable in the US.
Reiki for the New Human
We are naturally connected to the Universal Life Force Energy - the energy from which everything flows and is part of. In our modern world, our perception of this connection can become weaker as the busy-ness of our external world takes precedence as "reality." Usui Reiki is an amazing way to reconnect to the deep well of Love that is the source of all life, to navigate more gracefully the creativity and purpose of our life. Rather than being just for "hands on healing" it actually deepens our connection to the "inner well" from which our creativity flows and in the many ways that shows up for us.
We include Usui Reiki as a core offering because of its ancient, undiluted teachings as well as the rigorous attention to keeping intact the purity of this lineage's teaching and information.
Connection to the spirit of life is one of life's many gifts for all of us. The deeper the connection, the easier life flows, enhancing everything positive that we already do for ourselves. For that reason, Reiki is shared from the perspectives of an artist, musician, writer and "healer" offering this class for all individuals, especially creatives. Everything is naturally connected to the Creative Life Force and so we share from a place of no boundaries or labels of any offering being "spiritual" or otherwise.
We firmly believe that everyone should have access to this reconnection and so we offer reduced tuition, sliding scale contribution Level I classes several times a year. Level II and Level III classes are generally not reduced tuition, although we offer specials and packages with each advanced series. And individuals desiring to study further but who have been unable to do so because of life and financial situations are always welcome to apply for scholarships.

This Level I introductory class teaches you how to consciously connect to, strengthen and work with the flow of Life Force in all areas of your life in the practice of Usui Reiki. Part of this class is an energetic attunement, which opens and strengthens your energetic channels to this awareness, clears and aligns your chakras, and thus enhances your own health, well-being, intuition, personal energy and inner guidance. This beginning Level I workshop has an energetic focus on healing the physical body, and can help you manage stress, ease depression, pain and physical issues.
No previous experience, special knowledge or abilities are needed to learn this. We will spend a lot of time working with this energy from many life perspectives. This class includes the energetic attunement, the traditional Reiki lore and teachings, basic hand positions, heightened awareness of energy in the body, practice time, study of the chakras, auric fields, and a beautiful Reiki Certificate suitable for framing.
THE WORKSHOP PARTICULARS
- Workshop cost $100. A $60 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit is required to hold your spot in the workshop. The balance of $40 is due in cash the day of the workshop. Please check back in February, 2018 for exact dates.

These are immersive workshops into the advanced levels of Usui Reiki, offering Level II Practitioner and Level III Master/Teacher teachings and attunements. In addition, a new 6-month Master/Teacher Mentorship Program is also offered and available to Level III students who take the full workshop or a Level III Refresher workshop (more info on Refreshers HERE)
Once you have completed Level I and have waited the minimum 21-day "settling" period, you can study the next levels as desired. Once the Level I initiation has settled, you can go at your own pace of learning.
LEVEL II PRACTITIONER WORKSHOP
This in-depth class will take students into the Practitioner level of mastery. This level goes much deeper into consciously and intentionally working with Reiki - Universal Life Force energy - in all facets of your life. This class provides the Practitioner attunement of greater awareness and flow of this energy, and the giving of the three Practitioner symbols including the Distance symbol, which teaches you to work with Reiki multidimensionally, with individuals, animals, objects and experiences from a distance, no matter where you or they are. Some refer to Level II as the "rocket boost," as the attunement offers significantly more clarity of and ability in working with the energy. We will spend a lot of time learning the symbols and working with them, and working with this energy hands-on with others in the class, as well as offering this via distance to individuals, pets, objects, and experiences.
This class also includes your Practitioner Certificate, snacks and water.

Level III Master/Teacher Workshop

This workshop will take you onto the path of mastery and the ability to teach Usui Reiki to others. Mastery is a lifelong path that comes in part from working with the energy and the symbols regularly, and also working with how Usui Reiki "becomes" you and your ability to use it in the ways you are called. Mastery also comes, if you choose, from sharing the teachings and passing the attunements to others.
Both Master and Teacher levels are passed as one attunement in this class. You will receive the Master and Teacher level symbols and we will spend extensive time learning to use them. We will also spend extensive time learning how to teach Reiki and especially how to pass attunements. Students will practice passing attunements on each other. Whether you choose to teach or not, you will receive the all teaching information that I use and many resources and suggestions for creating your own classes.
This class also includes your Master/Teacher Certificate and your lineage in the Usui Reiki line. All Master/Teachers who have studied with me are twelfth in line from Mikao Usui. This class also includes your Master/Teacher Certificate, snacks and water.
LEVEL III WORKSHOP PARTICULARS:
- This workshop accomodates 8 individuals.

MASTER/TEACHER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM:

The mentorship program is created to assist new Master/Teachers in teaching Reiki classes, gaining confidence, creating their curriculum, passing attunements correctly and efficiently, and gaining experience working with a variety of different people through public Reiki events.
This program includes:
- Three months of one-on-one guidance via conference call/skype, offering support in teaching all levels of Reiki workshops, creating efficient curriculum, etc.
- Gaining valuable experience and confidence in teaching through assisting/co-teaching one workshop of each Reiki level, which includes passing an attunement to one student with assistance.
- Co-facilitatation of local Community Reiki Circles offered to the general public, which includes the opportunity to build clientele for workshops and private sessions
- Program Cost: $150
- Must be paid in full in advance

REIKI ANGELS TRAINING FUND
The Reiki Angels Training Fund is a new program that helps provide Usui Reiki training workshops to low income individuals through financial contributions from anonymous "Angels." These contributions help offset the cost of offering free or reduced fee Reiki workshops provided by Myrrh de Marmion and other Reiki Master/Teachers around the US. This includes expenses such as printing costs, snacks for classes, and especially space fees, which can be very expensive and many times are funded at least partly out-of-pocket when offering a free or reduced cost workshop.
